Concepts
This page aims to explain a few of the terms you may run into in this documentation, and give you a better sense of how to work with the RuneScape APIs.
Characters¶
A character is an individual player that you can log into RuneScape or Old School with. This is not to be confused with a Jagex Account, which is able to hold multiple characters.
Each character has a display name, which meets the following criteria:
- Between 1 and 12 characters long (inclusive)
- Can contain letters, numbers, spaces and underscores
- Does not conflict with another player - names are case-insensitive, and spaces and underscores are treated the same, so
Mod ExampleandmOd_ExAmplEcannot coexist
Players can change the display name attached to their character. At the moment, we do not provide a way to get a unique ID for individual characters.
Modules¶
RuneScape's back-end services are split into individual systems called modules, which are documented separately on this site. There are some modules where we run multiple instances (e.g. Hiscores) for different games and/or game modes; we will call these out where relevant.
